Matt and a couple of his buddies are heading up to Brushy Creek today, Saturday, March 20th, to do some fishing below the spillway. Mike and I hope to have some pics and a fishing report for you yet this weekend. Hopefully, the boys will have a successful outing!
Update:
Sadly, the Brushy Creek spillway was a bust…with temps just below freezing we hit the water after a slick ride up north from Ames. Friends Drew and Tim were in the TrailBlazer and away we went. We fished directly the below the spillway with no success and no fish caught. We were in search of the wiley walleye as well as the mighty tiger muskie. We threw some large spinners as well as the standard jig and a mimmowWe decided to go on a little walk that turned into a long walk down stream in search of another hole to fish. We didn’t find any fish but did have a baker’s dozen of deer that approached us in a terror from the other side of the creek. The deer clearly wanted to cross the creek to the area that we were fishing from. They probably would have mowed us down if Timmy didn’t give them a holler. To our surprise the deer headed just upstream from our location and began to bound into the creek struggling in the current to cross. All the deer crossed the creek and made it up the almost vertical hill ( see picture ) . except one. We watched as the little fella swam back to the side of the creek and fled in the opposite direction of his pals. This made the whole long walk to this area worth it. We also witnessed two bald eagles in the area.
Next we drove by Briggs lake that was iced over and unfishable.
We also checked out little wall lake that was just starting to shed some ice on the north side. Was surprised to see a sign suggesting that all walleyes under 15inches be released. Evidently there is a Little Wall Lake association that pays to have the lake stocked similar to other lakes in Iowa. So that was new to me, I would have hit it up ice fishing if I would have known that. Skunk river was unfishable due to weather conditions. While checking out a few spots we did run into four turkeys, just about literally!!! One turkey was dragging quite a distance away from the rest of the group and about ended up as a head ornament on my truck!
