What Walleye Lures Will We Use at Spring Valley?

Gary with a nice Lake Erie walleye.

Hello to all our Walleye Wisdom watchers!  I wanted to file a quick report before leaving early Monday morning to meet Ranger/Evinrude Pro Chris Burns in Davenport, IA and head on down to Spring Valley, Il, for some pre-tournament fishing with Chris and his brother, Dan, from Denver, CO.  We’ll be on the Illinois River through Wednesday about noon with our FLW Walleye Tour meeting late Wednesday afternoon.  The tournament begins Thursday, April 29th with two days before the full field is cut to the top ten for the final day on Saturday, May 1st.  Here’s hoping both Chris and I make the cut!!  Chris was able to pre-fish last weekend and reported he caught some nice Saugers while checking out spots.  Most of the walleye lures used on the Illinois will be three-ways off heavy weights to the bottom.  It seems anglers prefer the smaller Rapala shallow running baits off the snell with some creative bait presentations.  Also, I’m sure the “handliners” will be out pulling their heavy bottom weights with very long snells to their baits.  A variation of hand lining is to simply use a short, stout rod attached to the weight and the three-way.  We’ll see what the fish want during pre-fishing and the types of walleye lures catching them!  I’m looking forward to filing daily video and written reports for you and encourage you to come back to the site often.  Wish us luck!!  Spike
