Walleye Wisdom field editor Matt Speicher recently took a trip up to Ballard’s Resort fishing lodge in Baudette, Minnesota. Ballard’s is located on Lake of the Woods, one of the world’s premier walleye fisheries and also known as a go to, year round
hot spot for Northern pike, perch and small mouth bass. Here’s what Matt had to say:
Here is the fishing report from Lake of the Woods Minnesota (LOTW) September 16-18. We had a group of 4 fishermen that made the trek to Baudette, MN. Adam Chester, Ryan Bergman and I met the organizer of the trip Tim Ellerbroeck and began the trip north. Our stay included four night lodging and three days of charter boat fishing in the “ocean-like” Lake of the Woods. The great thing about this trip is we just packed our clothes and food and the rest was provided. We fished out of Ballard’s resort in a 26 ft long charter boat. It’s an 8am-5pm fishing day and the boats fish six guys and a guide so we had company on all three days. Friday and Saturday we had two gentlemen from Austin Minnesota with us. Arlen Schamber and Jim Frank both from the Austin Minnesota area. On Sunday we had two brothers one from grand forks and one from Fargo North Dakota. It was great getting to meet some new guys.
We were fortunate to land the same guide for the three days, Tim Lyon, and he did a fine job of putting us on the fish. We caught big numbers of saugers and a 26 inch eye on the first day. Second day alot more walleyes and not as many saugers with a 27.25 being caught. I even caught a bonus sturgeon! Third day we found the perch and really had a
blast catching them.
If you have never done a charter trip and you can fit it into your budget I would highly recommend it!
