Fishing education along with actual on the water fishing for big walleyes in the fall–sound interesting to you?! Huron, Ohio is where fishing pal Jim Wessels and I headed on October 31, 2019. The rain started in Indiana and continued the rest of our drive, all night, and during the day on Thursday. We both had signed up for Lance Valentine’s Fishing Education Weekend, an event he’s held over the past 15 years. The weekend combines classroom instruction on how to catch walleyes on Lake Erie along with actual fishing. Jim and I were able to get out on the Lake in the rain on Thursday, caught nine walleyes, then headed in before getting blown off the Lake. We made it to registration for the weekend at Blue Ribbon Catering in Huron and discovered 60 some anglers and support staff/vendors were there for the event. Jim and I were invited to a smaller group meeting with Lance that night while the rest of the FEW anglers ate back at Blue Ribbon. Our day of fishing was called because of the winds projected for Friday. We spent the day in classroom instruction covering topics from sonar interpretation to boat rigging for success. There was adequate time to mingle with other anglers plus enjoy a lot of Q&A. Jim and I discovered most of the anglers have been coming to Lance’s FEW for years. Saturday dawned early: we had breakfast together, got the morning fish information, then headed out. Jim and I headed back to the general area we had found fish on Thursday. It’s an area in front of the “white castle.” We pulled Bandits in 35 feet of water using the Precision Trolling guidelines for a two ounce weight at fifty feet then a few more feet to the Offshore Trolling board to get to your desired depth. Most of our bites came between 20-25 feet. We caught ten on our first pass running southwest to northeast with the winds! We caught our limit on the next pass, did some upgrades, then headed in as the winds began to build and it started raining again. We were able to clean our fish at a site set up by the FEW team. Saturday evening found us together for dinner, our evening seminar, and a tribute to long time supporter of FEW and Lance’s work, Duncan Wooster. Part of Duncan’s family came to join us and we raised over $2000 from a raffle to go towards a charity of the Wooster family. We even received a customized Bandit bait from Warrior lures painted in Duncan’s honor! Sunday morning we reviewed the results of record keeping sheets turned in by anglers on Saturday. Jim and I hooked on the Ranger 620 and drove home to Cedar Rapids in blue skies and no wind. We got the boat inside Walleye Wisdom headquarters, unloaded wet gear, and bid our goodbyes. Then, it started raining Sunday night. If you’d like to gain knowledge on how to catch fall walleyes on Lake Erie, we’d recommend you sign up for the FEW. Next year’s event will be four days, November 4-8. Please consider joining in for “Teachin’ Fishin’ Tuesdays at www.teachinfishin.com or facebook.com/teachinfishin. A final thank you to Jim for his help on and off the water and Mike for posting our story! Hope you enjoy the pictures! Spike
