Sturgeon Bay Ice Fishing Report!

Our final IFO (Ice Fishing Outing) occurred this past weekend on Sturgeon Bay, WI. Tracy Hayward, Dan Goiffon, Sam and Dan Mazuk, along with Cliff Klein drove with me up to the bay on March 12th. We checked into our rental house for a good night’s rest before losing an hour of sleep to the time change. We met our Silver Strike Fishing guide, Sid, before the sun came up on the only slab of ice remaining in the bay. Sid had prepped the area by drilling numerous holes at different depths. We did it the old fashioned way by carrying our pail from hole to hole. There were a number of other ice anglers quite a ways from us and we noticed a few ATV’s out on the ice. The six of us struggled with Dan catching our lone walleye in the morning. We left the ice about noon, went back to the house to eat and rest, then went back to Sid and the ice around 3pm. As the sun set, we caught another four walleyes and one whitefish. Dan caught a huge 29 inch, 9 pound walleye which gave he and Sid some heart pounding moments! Sid, Sam, and Dan were the only ones to catch a walleye while Tracy caught our one whitefish. Dan, Cliff, and I were skunked! As we took our last group picture in the dark, it started to rain and make the surface ice even more slushy. We made a decision to cut our trip short by one day because the rain continued through the night making the prospects of a second day on the ice not much fun. We kept a positive attitude which paid off with the bites at the end of the day. Please check out silverstrikefishing.com to learn more about their open water guide services along with their ice fishing services. We pushed the weather envelope and caught our limit through the ice but I marveled at all the pictures I saw on Facebook during our drive back to Cedar Rapids of the big fish being caught on the open water at Lake Erie!!
