National Walleye Tour, July 23-24, Green Bay by Gary Speicher, NPAA#128

“It’s been a tough practice for this one,” was the lament of many Pro-anglers fishing the National Walleye Tour in Green Bay this past week. Changing winds, water temperatures, and currents had many guessing where the winning walleyes would be. You know by now Korey Sprengel won the event with a two day total of 77.48 pounds and winnings of $92,130! Please check out the stories and results on the National Walleye Tour website. Korey figured it out, even with the competition on his spot during Day 2. My Day 1 Pro was Tim Pizzi from Menominee, WI. We had some wind to deal with on our day on the water together. We pulled his Fin-Wing lures with crawler harnesses in the central and lower central parts of Green Bay. Lots of sheephead and catfish came over the back of his Nitro. We did catch one walleye for 6.72 pounds to deliver to the Covid-19 compliant weigh-in at Oconto. NWT is using Facebook to cover the weigh-in so you can watch them live starting about 3pm each of the two-day events. My Day 2 partner was Rob Korth from Pulaski, WI. Rob took me on a long boat ride in his Yar Craft north of Chambers Island. We cast Shivver Minnows and Rapala Rippin Raps on a series of rock humps he hoped would produce some big fish–no luck. Our only walleye came pulling spinners south of Chambers. It weighed 5.13 pounds. We tried casting on one more spot near Sturgeon Bay with no success. I’m really glad I had my right shoulder cortisone shot a few weeks ago after a long day of casting!! My two day weight put me in 102nd place out of 120 co-anglers. We move on to the next event August 13-14 at Sault Ste Marie, MI. I fished there last year and enjoyed the beauty of the area and the competition from fellow anglers. My thanks to Tim and Rob for sharing a day on the water with me and to Mike G. for posting. I hope you enjoy the few pics and video interviews I did with Tim and Rob. Thanks, also, to my friend Mark Alexander for sharing a motel room and expenses with me. Tournament walleye fishing is not cheap but the memories are PRICELESS! Take care, Spike
