Bellevue, IA, was the scene for local trick or treating on Sunday evening, October 26, 2014 but not all the “tricks” played were in town! Our good friend, Chris Burns, arrived at the camper Sunday morning to join me for a day on the River. The morning wakeup was around 34 degrees but when Chris arrived around ten, the air temperature had warmed and the sun was shining. We started downstream stopping and casting cranks and pitching jigs with plastics on Chris’s favorite wing dams and closing dams. Chris connected with a beauty walleye on one of his “secret” spots–a solid 23 1/2 incher. We took some pics and put her back. We also ended up catching a nice 20 incher and a spunky 16 incher for walleyes. The surprise came when we stopped at a “reventment” or rock pile area where he noticed sea gulls feeding on surface bait fish. “When you see the birds, the fish are there,” Chris commented. We spent an hour or so catching one white bass after another on Bomber Model A’s. The bigger fish had to be at least two pounds!! All our fish were put back to fight another day. He had a few more spots to check downriver so we finished off the day with no additional walleye. The River leaf watch was in golden splendor as we headed back to the Riverview campground in the middle Lund Explorer late afternoon. Chris helped me load the boat before he headed back to Davenport for the evening.
