Matt Speicher’s NE Iowa Trout Fishing Report

With the vast majority of Iowa rivers surging with high water making the majority of them unfishable, why not hit up a NE Iowa trout stream?  Trout streams, for the most part, remain clear and the fish are HUNGRY!  Drew, a good friend of mine, caught 17 trout Saturday…including a couple of nice browns on live baits…releasing them all over five hours of fishing.  Drew accomplished this by fishing many different streams in Fayette and neighboring counties. On Sunday, Drew’s friend Lucas and son, Christian, joined him.  They caught 35 trout with Lucas getting in little fishing time because he was taking off the hook all of Christian’s trout!  “We were using worms and artificial baits with the nicer fish hitting on small spinners,” Lucas reported.  This success was experienced without the aid of any recent stocking!   Beginning April 1, the streams of NE Iowa will begin to be stocked regularly.  This will make the number of fish and fisherman rise on area streams.  This makes a perfect opportunity to take the kids out for some really nice successful fishing!  Don’t forget to buy your trout stamp along with a current fishing license.  Children under 16 do not need a license to fish with an adult but cannot keep any fish caught…but five trout are plenty for some grilled trout dinner!  So, while the rivers rage, hit the trout streams for greater fishing opportunity!  Matt
