Leech Lake Fishing Report

Terry Hora, Tracy Hayward, and I left for Walker, MN, on Saturday June 6th to attend the second National Walleye Tour Event held on Leech Lake June 12-13. We arrived in the rain, got our boat checked by the DNR, then headed to Big Rock Resort to unload our gear for the week. I want to thank Mary, Marty, and Ray for helping make our stay with them a good one. For the next four and a half days, we covered the expansive waters of Leech Lake attempting to put together a pattern to catch fish. It was helpful to have three rods in the water checking out spots during practice. Terry and Tracy were very helpful both on and off the water. We shared information with our walleyewisdom.com teammates–Mike Cira, Steve Miller, and Victor Wood–during the week. We learned the fish had moved off the main lake points and were in transition to the rock reefs. The walleyes were feeding on crayfish so we hunted them down on the rocks. We used live bait rigs and learned a long snell with a simple hook and a leech worked the best. We also caught them on slow death rigs and two-hook crawler harnesses. Terry fished on the co-angler side while I fished the pro side. Unfortunately, I zigged when I should have zagged and had a very poor tournament result of only three fish for the two days of competition. I hope you can go the the National Walleye Tour website to read the stories of both days results and check out the weights and tactics of the winners. We have a link for you here to check out the NWT website. I’m done competing for this year because of our daughter’s wedding and a family Canadian fishing trip in September. Will I fish the NWT next year? We’ll wait and see what the schedule for 2016 shows to determine if the Ranger 620, Evinrude E-tecs, and me do the circuit again. I wish all competitors, particularly my teammates, good success in the next event at Green Bay and the Championship at Devil’s Lake! Hope you enjoy the pics from our week of practice and the tournament weigh-ins! Best fishes, Spike
