Lake Erie Fun Fishing Report May 12-26, 2019

“I don’t think I want to do two weeks fishing here at Lake Erie next year,” commented my Canadian friend, Jim Lyon, as we walked from our Ranger 620 boats back to our Bays Edge condo in Port Clinton, Ohio. We had just finished our second year of entertaining two different sets of fishing guests. “I’m really tired and my back hurts,” Jim added. We were able fish almost every day and caught our limits of six walleyes per angler each day! The first week we had our police friend, Jim, and his two guests, Brandon and Dana from his home in Manchester, IA. We also had two of my engineer friends, Cliff and Dan, from Cedar Rapids. Jim and I took turns taking the engineers out and also had Brandon in my boat for one really special fishing day! The bite was north of Middle Bass Island just below the US/Canada border line our first week. Lots and lots of charter boats and lots of angler boats fished the area focusing on the walleye migration moving east. Jim Lyon’s big day the first week was when he and Dan caught a 31 inch walleye along with a 20 inch smallmouth bass! The Canadian pulled Bandits and Husky Jerks using the Precision Trolling Guide depth charts plus pulled “copper” wire along with the planer board fishing. The cop used the Precision trolling guide when he successfully presented his baits–Bandits, Husky Jerks, and Flicker Minnows. My big day was when Brandon caught an almost 29 incher plus a 26 incher when he fished in my boat! Lots of pictures were taken in the boat plus back at Bays Edge prior to fish cleaning. “I’ve never knew you could catch this quality of walleye, literally one after another, on such a big body of water,” Dana said. Jim Lyon’s Canadian friend, Doug, showed up Friday night and stayed until the next Wednesday and fished every day with Jim L. catching his limits! Our friends headed home on Saturday, the 18th, with handsome limits of Lake Erie walleye. By the way, Cliff caught one the bigger fish caught in my boat our first week. We were up early each day, packed a light lunch for the boat (Brandon was the exception!), then dined around the Port Clinton area with ice cream desserts at Toft’s Ice Cream store! So we had seven in the condo our first week with four anglers fishing Lake Erie for the first time. The second group of anglers came in Sunday, the 19th. We had Tracy and Mike from Cedar Rapids along with Steve from Sioux Falls, SD. Both Mike and Steve had never fished Erie. Jim L. was a popular boater the second week as we shuffled our guests back and forth between the two boats. I think he must has a special “bond” with Tracy! I enjoyed having Steve and Mike with me. The bite moved from up North to the South Passage with a migration of walleye moving below the Bass and Kelly’s Islands. We focused our efforts on the south side of Kelly’s using the “copper” set ups and Bandits while Jim L. used his Bandits and Husky Jerks to fill his livewell. I ran two jointed HJ’s on the outside boards with the “copper” making up our remaining four rods. By the way, our best bait colors were Khaki, Orange Crush, and some custom colors in Purple. The jointed HJ colors for us were purple (blue) and firetiger. All of the charter boats moved from up North to the South Passage our second week. We just stayed out of the “pack” running our program primarily with the wind but Jim L. likes to go back through the waves! We knew the weekend would be crazy at the Mazurik Boat Ramp because of the Memorial Day holiday so we decided to get on the water our last day at sunrise and catch our limits as quickly as we could to get off the water and avoid the ramp hassles. God heard our plan and delivered–the five of us had our limits in the live wells by 9:30am!! We were able to let our boats dry in the 84 degree 30mph winds back at Bays Edge. Jim L, Mike, and I worked together and moved one of my Airwave pedestals to Jim’s driver seat–he’d been eying my suspension seat for two weeks and said, “I have to have one!!” Thanks to Anna and Al at Airwave, a replacement seat is coming to my house but Jim isn’t coming down to help install….that’s okay, Tracy might be available! I want to thank all our pals who cleaned our fish and sealed them up for the ride home. We did take advantage of Bays Edge Fish Cleaning week two to help us delegate the daily chore. Our group of five did fine dine in the evening plus made almost daily trips to Toft’s! Steve caught some really nice fish and the biggest during the second week. There was some tackle buying at the Bays Edge Tackle Store and I remember Dan bought a new RS Net to take to South Dakota fishing! We all made it home safely Sunday with Steve, Tracy, and Mike helping me unload gear from the boat and Suburban at Walleye Wisdom world headquarters. It took me a couple afternoons to put everything back where it needed to go. So, what about 2020?! Jim L. must have been feeling better because when I text him today if he was “in”, he said YES! Looks like we’ll have others joining us in the coming year’s trip to LE. A special thanks to Mark Cahlik and the crew at Bays Edge who provided us with a luxury place to stay, help with the fish cleaning, and providing space with electrical hookups for those of us who bring out own boats. Mike Ganzeveld and I hope you enjoyed reading this report and looking at our photos! Lake Erie is a special place for walleye anglers–we hope you get to fish there!! Spike
