Tracy Hayward and I finished our crappie fishing trip to northern Mississippi’s Sardis Lake on Wednesday. In spite of the cool temps in the low 30’s, we were able to put the little Lund Explorer on the water early and went to the spot along the lake’s north shoreline where we caught them on Monday. One pass and no fish prompted us to move further east to the trees just south of the Teckville boat ramp–there were lots of boats fishing just outside of the trees with a few in the trees. Fortunately, the wind laid down and we were able to use the electric Minnkota bowmount to pull us at .4 to .5mph. Our six long rods each had the two hook rigs, some store bought and some we prerigged, while we creeped along in 7 to 12 feet of water. We caught 10 crappie from 11 inches to 14 inches during the day. Tracy also pulled in a plus 18 inch largemouth bass that decided to bite on our minnow rigs! Back at the campground, we took pictures then cleaned our fish. The weather report for Thursday was calling for winds of 20-30 mph so we decided to pack up Wednesday night to head home early Thursday morning. So, we caught a total of 18 crappie over the two days we could maintain boat control. If you travel down there with your boat, here’s a tip: take your drift socks with you! Those Mississippi crappie like the presentation SLOW! On the way home, we made arrangements to go to the cabins on Enid Lake in early April, 2015. Our goal is to fish all three lakes–Sardis, Enid, and Grenada from a central location–and spend a full week there. We hope you’ve enjoyed the pictures and stories from our trip.
