How to catch a 9+ pound walleye on the Mississippi River!

It was a beautiful day out on Mississippi Pool 13. Gary Speicher and I put the boat in the water at around ten o’clock this morning in Savannah, IL and after a chilly ride down the river we set up three way rigs to fish for walleyes above and around the numerous wing dams. No fish were caught but it wasn’t for lack of trying. We tried several locations up and down the East and West sides of the river but sadly weren’t able to coax any walleyes into biting. Anglers who we spoke to that had been out earlier that morning didn’t report any better luck. Just after we pulled out of the water to head back to Cedar Rapids, a bass angler pulled up along side of us and said he and his partner had caught a 9+ pound walleye while bass fishing! Ron Rieck and his partner shared they caught the nice fish on a big bass tube jig along some rocks next to deeper water near Sabula. “We’ve caught a lot of bass this past week on Pool 13–one of our favorites–but the big walleye was a bonus today!” Ron reported. Only wish Gary and I could have been close by to film the event for WW Watchers. Or, better yet, caught it in our boat!!
