August 6th Fishing Report from Maui, Hawaii by Gary Speicher, NPAA #128

We enjoyed a big day fishing with Strike Zone Charters out of Maalaea Harbor on Friday, August 6th! The event included members from son-in-law, John Berry’s, family along with Matt Speicher and Dan Chapman from our Maui condo. Our family’s were on the island for a week celebrating a renewal of wedding vows for Amy (Speicher) Berry and her husband, John. We hit the beach, snorkeled, attended the beach wedding and dinner afterwards, drove the road to Hana, and enjoyed a luau at Lahaina! Our fishing boat was a 43 foot Delta Sportfisher with Captain Jay and first mate Dana. It turns out these two alternate captain duties weekly. They have worked together for nearly 25 years fishing the ocean waters off Maui! We started our day by running six sport fish rods with surface baits off the back of the boat as we headed toward an area where we would jig the depths for smaller fish. About a half hour into the trip Justin hooked onto an Ono (wahoo) and got the beauty in the boat with Dana’s help! No other bites came before we stopped to jig some reef areas off the coast of Wailea. The bites were few and far between even though Captain Jay kept moving us around. We were using saltwater rods with four ounce weights with a single hook to which we attached cut up bait. After a long try, we pulled in the baits and restarted the trolling routine. I’m happy to report Justin’s dad, Joe, caught another Wahoo around 1pm so we had two in the boat for Dana to clean for dinner! We were back to our slip by three. Dana cleaned the two big fish and a few of the smaller ones caught. Matt prepared the fish for us Saturday night and it was very good! Oh, a bonus for us was seeing and getting a picture of a huge Marlin caught on another charter friend of Jay and Dan’s: it was the second largest caught in 2021 off Maui weighing in at 709.5 pounds! I’m glad we got to go fishing and to catch some great eating ocean fish during our week together in Maui. We stayed in condos at the Aston Maui Hill which you may want to check out if you decide to go spend a week or two. You can go to hawaiideepseafishing.com to set up a trip with Strike Zone (highly recommended for the experience). The vehicle traffic on the island and people traffic is much higher than normal with lots of people back to traveling. Just remember you get to wear a mask on your flight plus every where you go when inside. Thank you, Amy and John, for sharing your week with us and everyone from both the Berry families and our family! Thank you, Mike, for posting. Hope you enjoy this report and looking over the photos.
