Chester and I made it out last Saturday in hopes of bagging our limits of ducks. With a cold front moving in and temperatures plummeting by almost 20 degrees while we were hunting our hopes were high. We spent the morning hunting from a blind at Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt in Polk County. We only witnessed about three birds get shot at this location by other hunters during the morning hours. There wasn’t much of a migration going on and not

many ducks flying. In the afternoon we decided to go and try a small farm pond that we have permission to hunt. We managed to jump shoot a drake and a hen mallard and salvage the slow morning.

Reports are that Saylorville and the Red Rock area are holding a lot of ducks and geese. The only problem is getting them to decoy. With things starting to freeze up North the best part of the season may be upon us. The Canadians are starting to move big time in the central part of the state as well. So break out the layout blinds and the full body field decoys. Good luck and safe hunting to everyone that is heading to the timber for the deer shotgun opener this weekend.
